Assemblage characteristics of clay minerals and its implications to evolution of eolian dust input to the Parece Vela Basin since 1.95 Ma被引量:6

To understand the provenance and evolution of eolian input in the last 1.95 Ma in the Parece Vela Basin in the eastern Philippine Sea, the clay mineral assemblage of a gravity core PV090510 from the basin was investigated using paleogeomagnetic dating and X-ray diffraction. The assemblage of the core mainly consisted of smectite (-46%) and illite (-40%), with some chlorite (-10%) and kaolinite (-4%). Analysis of the provenance of these minerals suggested that smectite was mainly derived from volcanic rocks of the Mariana Arc, while illite, chlorite, and kaolinite were mainly transported as eolian dust by the East Asian monsoon from central Asia. We used the ratio of (illite+chlorite+kaolinite)/smectite as a proxy for Asian eolian input to the Parece Vela Basin since 1.95 Ma. This ratio followed glacial and interglacial cycles and was consistent with the intensity of the East Asian monsoon and aridity of central Asia since 1.95 Ma. The changes of the ratio reflected three different stages of the East Asian monsoon and provenance climate.

西菲律宾海第四纪钙质超微化石及微玻陨石地层学被引量:4

对西菲律宾海MD06-3047和MD06-3050两个柱状样第四纪沉积物进行了钙质超微化石和微玻陨石分析.经过鉴定统计,识别出自2.36Ma以来的7个钙质超微化石地层学事件,分别是Discoaster brouweri的末现、Calcidiscus macintyrei的末现、Large Gephyrocapsa的初现、Large Gephyrocapsa的末现、Pseudoemiliania lacunosa的末现、Gephyrocapsa caribbeanica的快速增长、以及Emiliania huxleyi的初现.同时,在MD06-3050柱状样岩芯1340~1374cm层位发现大量微玻陨石.通过氧同位素年代曲线对比,得出这些钙质超微化石生物学事件和微玻陨石事件的年龄.

Calcareous nannofossil bioevents and microtektite stratigraphy in the Western Philippine Sea during the Quaternary被引量:3

Two sediment cores, MD06-3050 and MD06-3047, were analyzed to study the Quaternary calcareous nannofossil and microtektite records. We dated bioevents and the microtektite impact event by calibrating with oxygen isotope stratigraphy. Seven calcareous nannofossil bioevents were identified over the past 2.36 Ma including the last appearance of data for Discoaster brouweri, Calcidiscus macintyrei, large Gephyrocapsa and Pseudoemiliania lacunosa, the first appearance of data for large Gephyrocapsa and Emiliania huxleyi, and the abrupt increase in the abundance of Gephyrocapsa caribbeanica. In addition, we fortunately observed that Australasian microtektites were distributed in core MD06-3050 from 1340 to 1374 cm.

Sedimentary response to volcanic activity in the Okinawa Trough since the last deglaciation被引量:2

To investigate the relationship between volcanic activity and sediment record on regional and temporal scales,158 surface sediment samples were collected from the East China Sea Shelf to the northern Okinawa Trough (OT),and two cores recovered in the northern and southern OT,respectively.Mineralogy,grain-size,and geochemical analyses of those samples show that:1) volcanic glass,volcanic-type pyroxene,hypersthenes,and magnetite increase in sediment influenced by volcanic activity;2) sediment grain sizes (and also silt content) increase in ash layers;and 3) the contents of Na2O and Zr are higher,while terrigenous elements,e.g.,TFe2O3 and K2O,and biogenous compositions,e.g.,CaO and Sr,are relatively lower in ash layers than those of non-ash layers.The distribution of volcanic ash has three distinguishing characteristics:1) volcanic ash is more abundant in the northern and central OT than the southern OT;2) volcanic ash increases from continental shelf to the trough;3) the sediment during the last 12 000 a suggests stronger volcanic events than during 15 000-12 000 a.The eruptive locations,frequency,and volume of calderas are among the most important factors controlling the distributions of volcanic ash.In addition,the main Kuroshio warm current that extends northward probably impeded the diffusion of volcanic ash to the west and south in the OT.However,a southward current probably carried some volcanic ash toward southern OT.
